The City Hearts Internship gives the unique opportunity to volunteer for an international charity involved in restoring the lives of vulnerable and exploited women, men and children through safe houses and holistic support programmes to create independence and lasting change.

Based in Sheffield (UK), City Hearts is one of the front-running organisations in caring for and restoring the lives of Survivors of Modern Slavery.

Why City Hearts?

Our Voluntary Internships provide an incredible opportunity to be a first-hand part of rewriting the stories of those who have been robbed of everything by their abusers and traffickers. By taking nine months out to be a part of our Voluntary Internship Programme, you will not only learn the ins and outs of how we care for and work with our Survivors to rebuild their future, but you will end your Internship with a broad understanding of charitable work, a whole wealth of employable skills, and the reward of seeing many peoples’ lives changed forever. Featuring training and workshops, regular supervisions and practical learning opportunities on placements.

Work with clients offering practical support as well as discovering the process behind each unique case and the life it represents.

Find out how City Hearts runs; learn how you can contribute.

Learning how to raise the profile of the charity through a whole host of different strategies, including fundraising. Warning: some of these will result in fun!

In Sheffield, accommodation on average costs £350 a month, dependant on the situation (renting, flat-sharing, or lodging). We recommend a living budget of £350 – £450 per month above accommodation costs for general living costs like food, transport, utility and phone bills as well as any personal spends you may like to make.

If you need some help in finding accommodation, please contact our Head Office at when you submit your application.

The internship is part time and is designed to allow space for you to find flexible part-time work locally to help finance their year. This should be considered prior to arrival as once the year starts it can be more difficult to focus on finding a job when you will be engaged in Internship life.

I came in desperate, broken and with no hope for the future, I left looking forward to a full life free from the issues that held me back. Now I am working to help others find that same freedom.
